On the first floor they have a large section of maps and tourist guides for China and Beijing.

Beijing Walks: Like a Flying Feather Through the HutongsI highly recommend the book Beijing Walks from Mao Xiang if you stay for a longer time in Beijing and want to discover Beijing on foot. The book has 16 nice walks: Walking through old Beijing hutongs, you will pass or visit many sites that you cannot find in any other tourist guide books, such as the last emperor’s mansion, princes palaces, residences of famous historical figures, temples and churches, old Embassy Row, imperial government offices, famous commercial streets with old shops, as well as mysteries and stories behind the walls. Pictures and maps are also provided to guide you in each walk. Background information enriches your knowledge about the events and stories once happened in this imperial capital.

101 Stories for Foreigners to Understand Chinese PeopleAnother great book that I discovered getting adjusted to the Chinese is: 101 Stories for Foreigners to Understand Chinese People. This book is a collection of 101 anecdotes and cultural learning’s, to explain everyday Chinese customs and etiquette to foreigners. And this book is a decidedly informal and humorous one, not an academic discourse on modern Chinese culture!

There is also a Spanish edition available 101 Histroias para que los extranjeros entiendan a los chinos

Hair dressers Dancing in the street

In Asia you see quite often that there is a company motivation drill in front of a hotel restaurant or shop. This is not very common to happen on in the western world. Today I was lucky to see the hair dresser motivation dance in front of their shop.

Quite an amount of participants having fun.

The world is flat buying on Amazon China

The world is getting flatter everyday, today I had a very good experience buying a HP Laser printer and setting up and Amazon account on their Chinese portal.

Buying on Amazon is such a relief as buying something in China in a shop is always a bargaining game that never ends, getting the price down 40% to 60% is very normal but takes time and patience. I am not always in the mood for this and that’s when you get abused also with some much fake products in the shops you never know if you bargain on the real thing or some imitation model. I trust Amazon so when I buy a brand I assume I get the real thing and not some imitation. I got the tip buying on Amazon China from some other Chinese guys working in my office they buy almost everything online. Next week we have a trade show and they were buying dress shirts.

Amazon China is a the Amazon site dedicated to the Chinese market they offer the site only in Mandarin so a foreigner who doesn’t read or write Chinese this becomes a bit of an issue. Thanks to Google Chrome automatic translation I was able to set up an  Amazon account and got my printer ordered and shipped to our new office in Beijing within minutes. A good bonus is that you can easy set up your account with an American or European Credit Card.

Farewell to Restaurateur Marcel van Berkum

Posted by Aruba Daily on October 17th, 2012

ORANJESTAD- Popular Restaurateur Marcel van Berkum passed away unexpectedly in the early hours of October 15, 2012. Marcel leaves behind two sons Michel and Philippe van Berkum, their mother Ulla van Berkum who live together in Sweden, cousin Erik van Berkum in Niagara Falls, sister and brother Steven van Berkum in Holland, lifelong friend Paul Schmit in France and his 1,000s of friends, fans and colleagues here on Aruba and around the world.

At only 44 years old, he had par-none expertise in the restaurant/bar industry gained from hard work and great accomplishments in Holland, Sweden, France and in Aruba. After F&B partnerships in Europe dissolved, he came to Aruba in 2004/5 to further his career with the exclusive Chez Mathilde Restaurant and later opening the Screaming Eagle together with Flying Fishbone Owner Daniel Kameier and Chef Erwin Husken.

The restaurant was an instant hit on the island filling the obvious void of “Island Chic” in 2007. Marcel, Daniel and Chef Erwin Husken, were also joined by Sven Schneider, Carsten Goetze, and Manager Jenn Phillips and so many more, who all added their ingredients to create a chic landmark restaurant for the island of Aruba.

Marcel was extremely charming and very knowledgeable in cuisine and wines from around the world. He shared his acquired knowledge with his partners, staff and guests; which further helped the Screaming Eagle become one of the most renowned restaurants on Aruba. Recognized as one of the best of the best in the entire Caribbean, the Screaming Eagle was recently featured on the Discovery Channel which was aired around world-wide. Marcel’s love for music was shared to all his friends and neighbors and especially Alethia, whether they liked it or not. He loved to spin old vinyl with new music to create his own version.

Those closest to Marcel knew that the most important loves were his children, he did everything he was capable of doing to make them proud. There wasn’t a day that he didn’t wake up, when he didn’t have great plans for himself and his sons, and thankful to Ulla for being such a great mother when he wasn’t able to be together with them.

There will be a farewell held on Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Olive Tree Funeral Home from 11 am to 1 pm.

Marcel van Berkum, born in Holland June 1, 1968 – October 15, 2012 where he died in Aruba, will be cremated here on the island and his ashes will be taken back to Sweden by Ulla.

(Apologies to anyone left out or incorrect information as a result the distraught author.)
