First a comment from Don Tapscott while he was interviewed at authors@google. Here is what education is: I am a prof, I have knowledge you are a student an empty vessel and you don’t. Get ready here it comes. Your goal is take data into short term active memory and through practice and repetition built deeper cognitive structures so you can recall it to me when I test you. Another issue where Don Tapscott is absolutely right and what I can recall from my school time was the process of lecture in which notes of the teacher go to the notes of the student without going through the brain of either. When I went to university I started enjoying learning and I became a life time learner. Before University I thought: School is a hobby when you don’t have to work or are not occupied with other obligations such as sports or friends. I was further amazed that what you did at university in a month took you nearly a year at secondary school. So it’s absolute clear why so many students are bored, not challenged, not engaged and eventually dropout.

The part of 7,5 hours sleep doesn’t make a lot of sense in the beginning but as the other hours are showed by the students all adds up to 26.5 hours, so the average student is now a 2.5 hour multi-tasker per day. Don Tapscott calls multi-tasking also switching ability according to the study 3 out of 4 Net Gen Students are doing it. I can see this often on the work floor in the office some colleagues can only concentrate on one task while the younger more computer literate are doing more tasks at the same time. At the end of the day everyone has done his work and I don’t believe that there is any difference in quality or efficiency.

I learned from the book to better understand my children about how they need to be engaged to the school program to have fun. Also I learned from the book why I never liked school. So an absolute must read if your children aren’t liking school it enables you to prevent them from dropping out.

Wink

Wink heeft 227,401,120 mensen op hun website geïndexeerd, een search op mijn eigen naam ging al iets beter want je zag keurig mijn linkedin profiel verschijnen en enkele google resultaten waar mijn naam ook op scoort. Ook bij Wink maar even een account aangemaakt. Je kan er wel aardig wat info over jezelf invoeren maar ik vind dat het niet echt mooi wordt weergegeven, daarnaast kan je niet enkele storende Google links verwijderen die niet op jouw van toepassing zijn.

ZoomInfo

Zoominfo is een mensen en business zoekmachine, het heeft op dit moment 38.138.210 mensen geïndexeerd en 3.585.399 bedrijven. Sinds kort hebben ze een samenwerking met Xing want aan de zijkant van de pagina komt een Xing applet te staan met je Xing netwerk. Ze adverteren dan ook Zoominfo + Xing de winning combination. Wel nu dat valt nog wel tegen want er was geen mogelijkheid om mijn Xing account aan mijn Zoominfo account te koppelen. Ook vervelent is dat mijn oude werkgever bovenaan zichtbaar is en niet mijn huidige werkgever. Kortom er moet nog wel het e.e.a. gesleuteld worden aan Zoominfo maar we houden het in de gaten.

YoName YoName doet precies wat de site zegt het doorzoekt social networks en blogs, echter de performance is nog slecht, mijn LinkedIn en Facebook account worden niet gevonden, wel mijn niet ingevulde Yahoo account. Echter een tweede zoekactie leverde wel mijn Facebook account op. Dit suggereerd dat er toch werkelijk de volgende claim waarmaken:

yoName data is always up to date using real-time results from social networks.

Een account aanmaken bij YoName heeft niet veel zin want je kan geen info over jezelf toevoegen. Het concept van YoName bevalt me goed, echter de betrouwbaarheid van een compleet profiel laat nog wat te wensen over.

Yoname is een tijdje geleden negatief in het nieuws gekomen van wege Spam, als je een vriend zoekt op basis van een email adres dan wordt er gelijk een email gestuurd naar die vriend met de mededeling dat er op jouw email adres gezocht werd op Yoname. Twijfelachtige praktijken, maar goed een internet startup kan het zich permiteren.

Ex.plode.us

e.x.pl0de.us een eerste search actie liep op niets uit Erik van Berkum onbekend. Terwijl ik toch een account heb bij genoeg social networks afijn, account aangemaakt en ben nu ook hier zichtbaar. Ex.plode.us heeft weinig te bieden als weer een profiel dat je moet onderhouden want de zoekmachine zelf werkt nog niet echt veel voor verbetering vatbaar dus. In de zoek resultaten verschijnt van mij nog steeds een cartoon van een Aap ondanks dat ik een profiel foto heb geupload. Hoewel ik de humor er wel van inzie toch niet echt professioneel.

Ziki

Een zoekmachine die het verbazingwekkend goed doet en bijna allemaal goede resultaten haalt is ziki. Ziki is een volgende generatie mensen zoekmachine gefocust op mensen, gedreven door mensen. Het bedrijf is in januari 2006 opgericht in New York. Ziki stelt zich ten doel personen en hun social networks op een gestructureerde manier weer te geven.

Conclusie

De uitdaging voor de toekomst zal zijn een service te bieden die werkelijk toegevoegde waarde bied. Voorals nog ontbreekt het daaraan en accounts bij elke people search engine moeten onderhouden worden behalve dan bij Yoname. Wink doet het ook prima omdat dit een combinatie zoek machine is van Social Networks en Google. Voor mij op dit moment de absolute nummer 1 als people search engine is Ziki.Com. De initiatieven zijn er maar er is mijn inziens nog niets wat de grote massa aantrekt.

Al enige tijd ben ik Plaxo gebruiker om precies te zijn sinds maart 2004. Plaxo is een online adressenboek en kalender die je kan synchroniseren met verschillende email applicaties en andere verschillende online adressen boeken.

Op dit moment worden de volgende email applicaties ondersteund:

• Outlook
• Outlook Express
• Mozilla Thunderbird (Beta)
• Mac OS X
• Yahoo
• Google
• MSN Hotmail of Windows Live
• AOL of AIM
• LinkedIn
• Windows Mail
• Mobile Access

Ik weet bijna zeker dan een ieder van jullie wel 3 van deze applicaties gebruiken. Het vervelende is dat je in al die applicaties een lijstje met adressen moet bijhouden terwijl het makkelijker is om een adressenboek te hebben. Tevens zorgt het Plaxo adressen boek ook dat er dagelijks gesynchroniseerd wordt met de andere adressen boeken.

Dus nog even samenvattend je voegt een contact persoon toe aan je messenger, er wordt automatisch gesynchroniseerd met Outlook of Thunderbird en viola alles is ge update met dezelfde info.

Hetzelfde synchroniseren kan Plaxo met kalenders van Yahoo, Google, Outlook dit gaat met dezelfde eenvoud, ook handig is dat je twee outlook kalenders of verschillende computers makkelijk gesynchroniseerd kan houden.

Sinds kort heeft Plaxo, Pulse toegevoegd aan haar site. Met Pulse kan je verschillende feeds van je verschillende social network site toevoegen zodat je familie en kennissen altijd up to date zijn.

Het voordelige van Plaxo is dat het helemaal gratis is. Er is ook een Plaxo Premium service, welke aan te raden is als je meer dan 1.000 contact personen in je adressenbestand hebt zitten. Via de Premium service heb je toegang tot het versturen van gratis Ecards, backup service, telefonische support, en de-duper een tool om dubbele adressen of contact personen er uit te vissen.

Ook is er nog Plaxo mobile services, deze heb ik nog niet gebruikt maar hiermee kan je een adressenboek synchroniseren met je mobile telefoon.
